More Information on Former Manager Ratings

Hello Applicant,

By this point, you have included a former manager and their email or phone number in one or more of your previous work experiences. So what is this all about?  Below are some answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

FAQs

Will these managers be contacted for reference checks?

Not by SmartMatch™ through this process. We simply verify your employment and ask 2 quick multiple-choice questions. The hiring organization may conduct reference checks at a later time independently of this process.

How exactly does the former manager verify my employment?

We ask the former manager to reply “Yes” or “No” to the following question: Did the applicant report directly to you in their last role at the [company you worked at together] in [date you last worked at that company]?

What are the 2 quick questions?

1. Would you rehire the applicant (which is you) (yes or no)
2. How you rate the applicant’s performance in that role (which is the role you worked in under their supervision) (1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 stars)

Do the former managers have the ability to add additional information about me?

No. They are just asked to verify your employment and answer those 2 simple questions that were covered above.

How long will this take my former manager(s) to fill out this information?

It should take them no longer than about 45 seconds to complete the whole thing.

Will my former manager(s) receive additional follow up emails and/or text messages?

No.  SmartMatch™ only contacts former managers once for each applicant.

Will my former manager(s) be added to any marketing lists and/or have their data shared with other organizations for marketing purposes?

No. A former manager’s information is confidentially stored, never sold, and not used for any marketing purposes.

Will the hiring organization see which former managers responded with their specific answers?

No. The hiring organization will only see whether or not that former manager confirmed your employment. All answers to the two questions about your employment are only ever shown in aggregated form. This protects the confidentiality of the former manager and makes them more likely to provide information about former employees.

What if I think my former manager(s) will not rate my performance in a positive way, but for reasons unrelated to my performance?

We understand there are situations where an employee was terminated or quit for reasons other than performance and possibly even related to the former manager. For this reason, we have provided a comment box for you to provide context about the situation. You can feel free to share as little or as much as you like about the situation. Also keep in mind that providing former manager information is ALWAYS optional and is not required to submit your application with the hiring organization.

What if I have not had any professional jobs with former managers?

No problem. If you don’t have any previous professional roles that you have worked at, perhaps you have other jobs with former managers that you reported to. These could be jobs like retail, restaurants, outside services, or any other roles where you were a W2 employee.

What if I have never had a job?

No problem. Including former managers is not required to submit your application.

Do I need to submit a former manager from my current employer where I’m still currently employed?

No. You do not need to submit any information on a current employer unless you are comfortable doing so.
